Yuma is a perfect example of a 'gerrymandered' city due to its haphazard voting boundaries that were put in place a few years ago. As indicated on the above map, the voting boundaries separating Congressional District 3 and Congressional District 4 meander through Yuma like a drunken turtle. The Redistricting Committee consisted of two Republicans, two Democrats and one neutral Independent. Independent - yeah, right!
The boundaries go down the center of streets splitting up neighborhoods, go around individual homes, and were laid out to create voter 'balance' (numbers of Republicans, number of Democrats and so on) All that the redistricting accomplished was create voter confusion.
New district boundaries will be forthcoming in 2020 and all we can do is hope that Yuma will be put back together again.
Congressional District 3 covers a large but sparsely inhabited section of Southwest Arizona. Cities include San Luis, Somerton, Western portions of Yuma, Buckeye, Gila Bend, a portion of South Phoenix, Tucson, Sells, Three Points, Rio Rico, Nogales, and the San Xavier Indian Reservation.
This seat is currently held by Raúl Grijalva. Running against Grijalva is Republican Daniel Wood (www.danielwood4congress.com)
Congressional District 4 encompasses a large section of the Western portion of Arizona. Running from the middle of Yuma going East to Dateland, North to Martinez Lake, Quartzsite, Augilia, Prescott, Congress, Payson, Lake Havasu City, Baghdad, and Kingman.
This seat is currently held by Republican Paul Gosar.
Here is another example where Yuma was dissected in order to 'balance'
the vote between Republican's, Democrat's and Independent's.
Member of the Senate: Lisa Ontondo (D)
Members of the House: Charlene Fernandez (D) (Minority Whip from Yuma) & Joel John (R) from Buckeye, AZ .
More confusion for the voter.
Member of the Arizona Senate for Legislative District 13: Sine Kerr (R)
Members of the House for Legislative District 13: Timothy Dunn (R) and Rep. Joanne Osborne (R)
This is what is referred to as the "Yuma Legislative District Notch". From North to South: The L.D. 13 notch boundary starts at Interstate 8 and Pacific Avenue and runs South to 24th Street. It then turns West to Avenue D, then turns South to County 14th Street, then turns East to Avenue A, then turns South.
The people who came up with these boundaries should have been fired. They totally abused their responsibility to the voter.
